Botanical Name: Scutellaria lateriflora
Origin: Vermont, USA

Skullcap is known to soothe nervous tension and renew and revive the nervous system as a whole. The herb is traditionally utilized to balance feelings of irritability, exhaustion and distress. Skullcap gets its name from the two-lobed flowers that resemble the military helmets worn by European settlers. In the late 18th century, the herb was referred to as “mad dog weed” as it was found to be potentially helpful in treating rabies.

This plant is a member of the mint family, and spreads all over through rhizomes. We find that this herb can be particularly finicky to grow. Skullcap likes to be hydrated and struggles in drought. The environment skullcap thrives in reflects its effects on the body: calming and grounding. The best crop we ever grew was the first year in our wettest field. We get one harvest each season, when the plant’s little blue flowers are in bloom. This is our Farm Manager Ben’s favorite botanical to grow.

The taste is cooling and slightly bitter. Herbalists often tincture this herb fresh and also drink in tea.

Enjoy skullcap in our Time to Unwind tea blend and learn more about our Fresh Preorder Program here.
