Botanical Name: Leonurus cardiaca
This large leafed perennial herb is also known as “Mother’s Herb,” as wort translates to “herb” in Middle English. In the herbal community, this herb is beloved for “gladdening and strengthening the heart,” and is considered a tonic for women’s emotional and reproductive health. The Latin name Leonurus refers to the leaves resembling a lion’s tale, while cardiaca suggests the herb’s influence on the heart.
We get one harvest per season from this plant often in July when it’s in peak bloom showcasing its beautiful pinkish purple flora.
Motherwort is quite bitter and is often tinctured, taken as a capsule, or steeped into tea.
