Botanical Name: Matricaria recutita

Origin: Vermont, USA

This herb is very gentle and known for its calming effects. Surprisingly, German chamomile grows very well for us in varied climates (both wet and very dry seasons). Traditionally, this herb has been considered a “cure-all.” In Native American traditions, it is said that folks drank the tea as a way to alleviate gas, dispel constipation, promote respiratory functioning, lift the mood as well as to make jewelry and perfume. The plant has been used cosmetically to lighten hair, soften skin, and perfume the body. When the tea is steeped for longer time, the herb’s bitter quality is known to support healthy digestion. Due to the herb’s gentle nature, mothers often incorporate the blossoms into bathwater for their anxious children or teething infants. The Latin name Matricaria originates from matrix meaning “womb,” highlighting the herb’s potential beneficial healing for women.

We harvest these blossoms by hand in early Summer using custom hand rakes made for us by Hubbard Rake Co. via Johnny’s Organic Seeds. We harvest midday into the afternoon when the sun is out and blossoms are open wide. We dry the blossoms in our greenhouse on racks at low temps - with a light fan for airflow - to retain vibrancy and vitality.

We love to infuse this herb for tea each night, especially in the winter when our surroundings are cold and heavy. The blossoms provide a calming light energy. Our crew refers to the herb as manzanilla, which translates from Spanish to “little apple.” The aroma of this magical plant does evoke the essence of that sweet fruit.

Enjoy these blossoms by themselves or try our single-origin botanical extract!
